Project HEADING_TITLE

Our main project now is teaching kids to read and write. Most of our students are sellers of handicrafts from around Lake Atitlan, who have difficulty attending the government schools. It is because they have to be on the street selling tipicos (traditional Guatemalan handicrafts) in order to earn money to feed their families.

Below are some pictures from our recent class :

Reading Class
Somos Iguales temporary class. Juana Lux is one of Somos Iguales avid readers.
Loel with students in the class.  Loel taught Juana Lux to read.
Another avid reader, Juana Perez Sanchez Victoria learned from computer software.
Juana learned how to read from book "De Lectura y Escritura"  Victoria learned how to read from computer software.

English Class

Vetina learned English.English is not commonly known among the handicraft sellers in Guatemala. And this causes communication problems while they try to sell handcrafts to tourists. That is why we see it is important to teach them English so they can communicate better. Pictured here is Vetina learning English language from computer software "Pipo".

To support these projects, we look for donation of new or used books (especially in Spanish), computers, or laptops. Volunteers are also welcomed!

Art Class

Mateo and his coloring project.Art is very important for children to develop their creativity and imagination. At Somos Iguales class, we give the younger students -most of them age 5 to 7 year old- some art projects, such as drawing, coloring, painting, etc. Here you can see Mateo, 7 year old, coloring his project.

You can help this class to grow by making donation of coloring books, color pencil, crayons, or any other art projects.

After Hurricane Stan
Damage caused by hurricane Stan. This small tin house is where Juana Lux and her family live.

Some of our students who live in San Antonio-Palopo lost their houses during Huricane Stan (October 2005). They have to live in a little shack while waiting for a new house to be rebuilt.
