Scarves are a great accessory, summer or winter. Bright cotton headscarves can work with any hair length and can really help to create a fresh, different look. A wool scarf in winter is a classic complement to winter outerwear.
Our Somos Iguales scarves are hand woven by Mayan women and their families living in the villages around Lake Atitlan, a beautiful lake in the Guatemalan Highlands. Colors, size and designs will vary.
Most pieces are created on a traditional backstrap loom, creating a soft texture of loosely and tightly woven strands. The strap passes behind the weaver's back and is attached to both ends of the cloth rod. A cord, which is attached to both ends of the upper warp rod, is tied to a support. The loom is portable, but very tiring to operate since the weaver must constantly adjust and maintain the tension of the warp.
Backstrap weaving is an ancient and highly-skilled technology that is passed on from mother to daughter and each inch of fabric takes approximately one hour to weave. |
